<p>These are legitimate questions any intelligent person would ask before converting their car.  It wouldn&#8217;t make much sense to save a wad of cash on fuel only to spend it on repair bills.</p>
<p>Knowing full well that there&#8217;s a lot of misinformation out there on how to convert your car, I&#8217;ve taken my findings from research along with consumer reviews and compiled a list of conversion guides that actually work. So, does this water and gas conversion work, or are there hidden drawbacks you need to be aware of? </p>

<p>The auto industry has seen the increase in the demand for eco-friendly vehicles as the global community becomes more aware of the threats of global warming.  To address the demand, car manufacturers have been investing in the development of eco-friendly vehicles.  </p>
<p>One of the more promising technologies is the use of hydrogen as fuel.  Hydrogen is the most abundant gas in the atmosphere and when burned, this alternative fuel pro<span id="more-99"></span>duces no greenhouse gases.  That is why car manufacturers like the Ford Motor Company have been making partnerships to do research on the development of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.  </p>
<p>Recently, FoMoCo of Australia partnered with the University of Melbourne to delve in further into the hydrogen fuel cell technology.</p>
<p>The university also recently received a $1.2 million grant form the Victorian State Government.  With that grant and with Ford supplying engines to the university, the practical use of hydrogen as vehicle fuel will be studied even better.  Ford Australia President Tom Gorman said that “Ford Australia is proud to extend our relationship with the University of Melbourne through this important project.”  The study will not only focus on the practical use of hydrogen as fuel for vehicles but also on the production of hydrogen. </p>
<p>While hydrogen is abundant, it combines with other elements. So, therefore, for it to be used as fuel, it has to be extracted first.  Another problem in the use of hydrogen as fuel is the construction of fuel cells.  As of today, fuel cells are fragile and can only withstand low vibrations which means that the current technology is impractical for off-road vehicles since the bumps encountered during off-road driving can severely damage the whole fuel cell assembly.  </p>
<p>The participation of Ford on the hydrogen research is not surprising since the company is one of the leading car manufacturers which have already been investing on alternative fuel development.  Gorman has this to say about Ford’s dedication to the development of alternative fuel vehicles:  “Globally, Ford Motor Company is a leader in the development of alternative fuel vehicles and technologies. The Escape Hybrid, our range of E85-capable flexi-fuel vehicles, and the recent showcasing of the world&#8217;s first drivable fuel cell hybrid electric vehicle with plug-in capability are all examples of our broader global efforts.”</p>
<p>Gorman added that:  “The University of Melbourne project is the first to research hydrogen engine alternatives using an Australian sourced engine, and will be an important complement to these initiatives.”  The University of Melbourne will be aiming to produce a hydrogen fueled six-cylinder engine from Ford.  The technology being developed at the university is called the Hydrogen Assisted Jet Ignition or HAJI for short.  This technology when used in a car can provide a performance similar to that of a car equipped with a </p>

<p>The Hydrogen Engine Center or HEC recently announced and demonstrated the use of ammonia as fuel.  Before an annual meeting of the center’s shareholders, the ammonia and hydrogen powered engine was unveiled by the HEC. The engine has been in development for the past three years and now that it was complete, the company sees it fit that it demonstrates the capability of the engine.  </p>
<p>The test was conducted with HEC’s Oxx Powe<span id="more-11"></span>r™ 4.9-liter six-cylinder engine. The engine used the Oxx Boxx™ engine controller and a dual-fuel injection system. The test was done with the engine running on a mixture of hydrogen and ammonia.  The fuel used is composed of 95 percent ammonia and 5 percent hydrogen.  The hydrogen in the fuel combination is used as a combustion catalyst.</p>
<p>The use of ammonia with hydrogen gives more power to the engine. As far as emission is concerned, the result of burning ammonia and hydrogen in an internal combustion engine is water vapor and trace amounts of nitrogen oxide.  The amount of water vapor released by the engine is considerably more than the amount of water vapor produced by engines designed to run on hydrogen.  The fact that ammonia does not contain carbon points out that ammonia is a clean alternative fuel.</p>
<p>“We have been awaiting the day when we could add ammonia to the world&#8217;s list of potential fuels and today is the day,” says HEC President Ted Hollinger during the demonstration of the engine. “The performance of the engine is very impressive. This demonstration clearly shows that anhydrous ammonia can be used as a fuel,” he added further.</p>
<p>Ammonia is considered as a promising alternative fuel because of its abundance and clean burning attribute. Initially, the use of ammonia as fuel is confined to rockets.  Currently though, as the price of gasoline increases and alternative fuels are being developed, the promise of ammonia as a good substitute to gasoline became apparent and was developed by companies such as HEC.  The only problem faced with using ammonia as fuel is that in the production of this fuel, carbon dioxide is produced.  Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas which is responsible for the global warming phenomenon.</p>
<p>When being used as fuel, it is more reliable if mixed with hydrogen.  HEC pointed out that hydrogen can be produced by an engine which will then be used in conjunction with ammonia which in turn will be stored in a tank. </p>
<p>“We will continue our endurance testing, and then we will install an ammonia/hydrogen-fueled engine in the Oxx Power™ hydrogen-fueled genset that is currently powering our dyno room,” says Don Vanderbroook, the HEC’s Chief Operating Officer.  “By doing this we can reduce our hydrogen storage requirements and gather valuable data on the operation of this engine. Solving the hydrogen storage problem by use of ammonia opens up the market for zero emission engines and systems by providing fuel cost competitive and logistically viable alternate energy systems. Ammonia is a fuel that is available today through cost-effective delivery and storage systems that have been proven over time,” he added.</p>
<p>Whether ammonia can be applied as a practical alternative fuel is still undergoing scrutiny.   But by the fact that it produces almost zero potentially harmful gases, it looks as if ammonia will be a great substitute to gasoline and a great complement to vehicles equipped with <a rel="external nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.activebrakesdirect.com/ebcrotors.html" title="EBC rotors">EBC rotors</a>.  </p>

Engine is started on Petrol, then fuel is switched off. Petrol in carby is exhausted after approximately 2 minutes 30 seconds. I recently discovered it can be made on-demand from tap water through electrolyzing.<br />
