Name and definition

Robert Stirling was the inventor of the first practical example of a closed cycle air engine in 1816, and it was suggested by Fleeming Jenkin as early as 1884 that all such engines should therefore generically be called Stirling engines. This naming proposal found little favour, and the various types on the market continued to be known by the name of their individual designers or manufacturers, e.g. Rider’s, Robinson’s or Heinrici’s (hot) air engine. In the 1940s, the Philips company was searching for a suitable name for its own version of the ‘air engine’, which by that time it had already been tested with other gases, eventually settling on ‘Stirling engine’ in April 1945. However, nearly thirty years later Graham Walker was still bemoaning the fact that such terms as ‘hot air engine’ continued to be used interchangeably with ‘Stirling engine’ which itself was applied widely and indiscriminately. The situation has now improved somewhat, at lea » Read more: Stirling engine

Hydrogen Car: The Answer To High Gasoline Prices?

August 6th, 2010

The recent rise in gasoline prices have given people more reason to look for alternative means of transportation. The rising cost of using gas may have motivated a lot of people to clamor for an alternative form of transportation that would help usher in an age where humans no longer have to depend a lot on a so-called Oil Economy.

And with the move to look for alternative sources of transportation, many researchers have begun looking into other forms of alternative fuels in order to run future vehicles. One of the most attractive and in fact the most appealing concept provided is the use of hydrogen to run cars. It would only be time before hydrogen cars would be used as the primary transport in the streets. Btu what exactly is it?

A hydrogen car is a relatively new type of transport vehicle that uses hydrogen as its primary on-board fuel. The hydrogen car is different from conventional vehicles in that it uses a different type of engine to make the » Read more: Hydrogen Car: The Answer To High Gasoline Prices?

Hot to Build a Hydrogen Fuel Cell to Run Cars on Water

With the fluctuating price of oil, and gas prices at the pumps going up more often than going down, people have been thinking about hydrogen for cars. In particular they have been asking how to build a Hydrogen Fuel Cell so they can run cars on water as well as gas.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell cars, sometimes called water powered cars are nothing new, the technology to run cars on water as a supplement to your ordinary gasoline has been around for » Read more: Hot to Build a Hydrogen Fuel Cell to Run Cars on Water
